Memorial Day-The Cost of Freedom
Today is a special day set aside to remember all of those who gave their lives to keep the rest of us safe. Over the years, this day has had different effects on me. In peacetime, it has meant beer, barbecue, friends and family together for an extra day off without a single thought as to the cost of that freedom. In wartime, it has meant beer, barbecue, friends and family together for an extra day off with a lot of thought as to the cost of that freedom.

As an American, I take my freedom for granted with a sense of entitlement by birth right. While I possess a fertile imagination, I really can't begin to comprehend how my life would have been different had there not been brave soldiers who believed that the freedom I take for granted was worth dying for to ensure it. While I may not be able to fully imagine my life without the freedoms I am granted as an American, their sacrifice helps me to understand just how precious it is.

Down the hall sleeping right now are two very precious extensions of my life, a beautiful and bright teenage girl and a handsome, energetic all American boy of seven, two of my grandchildren. I sit here in the dark wondering what they will see in their lifetime. Their great-grandparents grew up during WWII, their grandparents during Vietnam, and their parents grew up during relative peacetime when wars were “cold,” fought with words not bullets. We’ve gone from “black-out curtains” through “duck and cover” and now its “duct tape and plastic.”

Oddly, I think it was their peacetime parents that felt the most threatened by the fear of war when they were growing up. My mind wanders back to the eighties, when my children actually had nightmares about a nuclear war that would never happen. Maybe because they had yet to live through a war, that the threat was worse than reality, if you weren’t the ones doing the actual fighting. Previous generations had been inoculated by experience, the daily headlines, and the incessant evening news. Now a new generation is being inoculated. Their fear won’t be of the unknown but of the known.

I wish I had some words of wisdom to pass on to them about the world they face. It really hasn’t changed that much. There have always been bad people in the world to watch out for; there have always been good people to protect you. Put your faith in the good people and make sure you are one of them. Sleep tight kids, your world is as safe as it can be because there are those who understand the threat and value of your freedom enough to guarantee it.

So while we are enjoying "the land of the free" today we offer a most humble thank you to those who represent "the home of the brave" and who keep it that way. A very special thank you to all of those who had the courage, strength, and willingness to sacrifice their lives because they understood the very high cost of freedom.

Operation Cool Our Troops
Yesterday, my Internet connection was down so I started reading John McCain’s new book Why Courage Matters. While I disagree with Senator McCain voting record 99% of the time, he is 100% on the mark with this book and it’s amazing stories of courage.
In talking about 9/11 and the Iraq War he says, “The majority of us will stay at home, going about our business with or without a heightened sense of alertness, keeping the old home fires burning, the economy functioning, and, we hope, our morale up.” This is not a suggestion list of what we civilians might do in wartime; it’s the civilian’s job description during wartime. We have a job to do in this war also and one of our most important duties is supporting our troops.

When you live in Phoenix, you know something about surviving the heat and how debilitating it can be. It's difficult to get outside work done and not wind up with heat exhaustion or heat stroke, when the mercury hovers around 120 degrees and nighttime lows are in the mid 90's. We've learned to adjust our schedules and do our outside work in the coolest part of the day. And when there is no shade left to work in, we hit the pool or air conditioning because it just gets too darn hot. If only it could be that way for our soldiers serving over in the Middle East. Summer is coming once again to them and they don't have the luxury of jumping into the pool instead of making that patrol.

You may not know it but we did lose soldiers last year to heat stroke. Let’s make sure we don’t this year. They have enough obstacles to overcome already. Operation Cool Our Troops is gearing up to send 50,000 more misters to our service men and women to give a little comfort and preventive medicine to them once again. This year the manufacturer of the misters has tooled a special model just for them. Desert camouflage, instead of the usual festive, bright colors that would draw unwanted attention to them. Please check out this site and help these two terrific women keep our troops cool through a donation. If you can’t afford a donation, use their send message to the troops link to say thank you and keep up the good work. (The site has not been updated yet but the bank account numbers to donate to are the ones they are still using.)

(Hat tip to Bruce Jacobs at KFYI for bringing this project some awareness. Until his show yesterday, I didn't know it existed.)

Where's the Plan?
For months we have listened to every opponent of the President repeat the mantra of "There's no plan" which was dutifully reported in the mainstream media. So the President books prime time to lay out the plan that he has stated in bits and pieces for months and where is the mainstream media? Running two hours of "Fear Factor." If you don't have cable, you didn't hear what he had to say. I think this is racist behavior on the part of the MSM. If they can play the race card, so can I.

By not showing the President's speech tonight on regular TV, the MSM had disenfranchised those who are economically repressed. Those who cannot hear the speech live must depend on reading it in a publication that the writer has carefully sculpted their opinion into the article as if to tell those who cannot afford cable that they are also too stupid to draw their own conclusions. Since minorities make up the largest group of the socioeconomically repressed population, this must be racist behavior. Also by running two hours of idiot TV, the MSM must be telling these disenfranchised people that they aren't interested in what's going on in the world and they would more appreciate Fear Factor. Your condescending attitude must also be evidence of your racism. Now I'll leave Liberal La La Land and return to sanity.

I wish the White House would hire Peggy Noonan to write the President’s speeches. Peggy has a way of putting words to paper that exemplify a Commander in Chief and at the same time exemplify a loving, caring man. For those of us who have followed in depth the developments in Iraq, tonight was preaching to the choir. For those who have not, it probably seemed dull. There were so many examples that would have provided some color to this illustration. His goal should be to illustrate and illuminate his concepts in a way that anyone can relate to them.

My husband uses a mechanic as an analogy for Iraq. Your car breaks down and you take it to a mechanic. The next day you check on the progress and you find the entire engine pulled out of the car and it is in pieces. You go hysterical that this is worse than it was yesterday, at least yesterday there was an engine in the car. It didn’t work but at least it had an engine. Now it doesn’t even have an engine! This is terrible.

Not many things get fixed without disassembling them completely first. That’s true of countries that have just been liberated also. It may look terrible at times but it is just part of the fixing process. With patience and persistence, it gets put back together again and this time it works. That’s what’s going on right now in Iraq. Find some more patience and persistence; we haven’t started the reassembly yet. That comes on June 30th. And it’s all part of the plan and always has been.

From your big mouth to terrorist ears.
John “F’ing” Kerry slithered out from under his rock long enough yesterday to tell the world that if he’s elected he will pull the troops out of Iraq. Maybe he is suffering a mind melt down after visiting Planet Nader. Maybe he selling his soul to get that 5% vote of the looniest of the looney left that are currently demented enough to cast a Nader vote. If it were just his worthless soul, I wouldn’t be upset but the moron just sold the rest of us down the river.

So let’s recap here. If President Bush gets re-elected, the War on Terrorism continues. If John Kerry gets elected, we put our tails between our legs and go home. History repeats itself and their belief that Americans are weak-willed and cowardly is affirmed. Which candidate would you want to win the election if you were a terrorist? Got any ideas on how you might try to influence the election if you were a terrorist?

Let’s see, first we’ll step up our attacks on the troops in Iraqi, use more IED’s, pull out the ones with Sarin and Mustard gas too, behead a couple of more civilians and release tapes of it to Al Jazeera, they will air anything we send them. Oh yeah, and don’t forget bombing the homeland, it worked in Spain. Definitely worth another try.

NEWS FLASH-The FBI has just released a notice to law enforcement agencies to watch for suicide bombers in our midst.

I wish I could believe Mr. Kerry was just incredibly stupid but I don’t think he is. I think he is maniacal, dangerous, and unscrupulous. Not qualities I want in a Commander in Chief or a President. Better start praying for all of our safety, Mr. Kerry values politics over our lives.

The number of terrorist attacks dropped to a thirty year low in 2002 and is down by 44% from two years previous. We are coming up one the third anniversary on 9/11 this year and we have not had another terrorist attack in this country. I don’t want to let facts get in the way and muddle Mr. Kerry’s thinking, but there is a reason for these statistics. THE WAR ON TERRORISM IS WORKING. IT’S WORKING. IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT.

Meddling in the Middle East
Looks like we have a lot more meddling to do in the Middle East.

I check in periodically with an Egyptian blog to get his perspective and yesterday's entry was a little bone chilling at first. In a website survey 65% of respondents agreed with the beheading of Nicholas Berg. From GM's website

35% against 65%

Yesterday I logged on Egypt’s top web portal www.masrawy.com. They had an opinion poll asking web surfers whether they agree or disagree with the beheading of Nicholas Burg. 65% said yes they agree, 35% said no they don’t. I was shocked and disgusted.
Well, when I entered the forum where people discuss the poll, I discovered that most of those who participated in the written forum were from the 35%. They kept saying how they were shocked at the 65% number and how those who voted “yes” were so barbaric and inhumane. They said that Burg was there to help in the reconstruction of Iraq and he was not military personnel. I was relieved when I read their comments.

Fortunately, this is a web survey and I have no idea what parameters were allowed and who the respondents were so I won't take it too seriously but I think it gives a sense of just how much work we have to do in the Middle East and just how long the War on Terrorism will take because of the depth of the hatred, even if it is a small number. How even one person could justify the beheading of Nick Berg is beyond my comprehension.

Sarin and Mustard gas found in Iraq. What a surprise. For those with their head in the sand, this will be played down. I wrote this article back in June of last year. And this one in January after David Kay's report. Barely mentioned in the mainstream media a few weeks ago, a foiled plot in Jordon to gas 80,000 people. I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg and I pray for the troops and Iraqi people now that they are surfacing. The big guns will come out and be used as the June 30th date looms closer. Toughen up folks, it's about to get much worse before it gets better.

Un-American
The US Olympic Team athletes are being told not to wave the flag while celebrating during medal presentations this year in an effort to not appear jingoistic and “for fear of provoking crowd hostility and harming the country's already-battered public image” according to the Washington Times. This advice is coming from Mike Moran, a consultant to the USOC.

Here’s my advice to the US Olympic Team athletes. You have trained long and hard to get to these games. When you have won a medal, you celebrate any damn way you please and be damned with what the rest of the world thinks. Mr. Moran’s advice and the position of the US Olympic Committee are flat out wrong and insulting to all Americans.

The Committee must be suffering from some form of hate America dementia. For those in the world who hate us, your success with a medal win will have the same effect of provoking hostility no matter how humble you try to appear. By their way of thinking we shouldn’t even participate for fear of “the bullies” looking like gloating winners. Don’t expect them to go that far as that would mean unemployment lines for them.

This is a form of appeasement that will do nothing but make the US look weak. I have news for the Olympic Committee; the US has nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to apologize for. These athletes shouldn’t be caught up in politics but if you are going to insist they do, at least be on the side of your own country.

The US Olympic Committee is wrong taking this position and I hope you all will make us all proud. Be strong and be safe and you have nothing to be ashamed of representing the United Staes of America.

I’m Mad as Hell...(Oh no, here comes another one of her screeds.)
The image of an Iraqi prisoner being humiliated while being forced to wear a pair of women’s underwear on his head has been shown continually for weeks now on thousands of TV stations around the world. The image of an America civilian losing his head, literally, gets a single day of coverage. Could the media’s political bias and mind manipulation be anymore blatant?

I don’t know what planet the people that produce our media are from. It’s hard to believe that any business that generates that much income could be so out of touch with their customer base. Do any hardworking Americans give a damn about prisoner abuse right now? I don’t. (I’m still trying to suppress feelings of nuke them all.)

My mother taught me that two wrongs don’t make a right. She was correct, they don’t. What happened at the prison was wrong. And what happened at the prison is being dealt with including starting next week with a public court martial. So where is the story in this to grab the headlines? Problem identified, investigated, changes instituted, and resolution is coming soon to a television, radio, and newspaper near you. Get back to me on this one when we know the verdicts. Because frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.

My mother also taught me to keep things in perspective. She, as always, was right again. You want a torture story media? A man’s head was sawed off his neck on videotape! THAT’S A TORTURE STORY!
The tape was released and has been shown all over the world and his family is beside themselves over the fact that this video will haunt them everyday for the rest of their lives. THAT’S A TORTURE STORY!

Perhaps we need to consult those who have been prisoners of war as to what the definition of torture is. I read a story about how sleep deprivation is used to torture prisoners. Sleep deprivation is a way of life for the 900 million menopausal woman in the world, when did that become torture? Hang tough prisoners, if 900 million menopausal women can survive this brutality, you can too!

All right, some really raunchy stuff happened also. At least they got to keep their heads about them, that’s more than Nick Berg got.

This screed was cathartic for me. If you need an outlet for your anger how about flooding the NYT, LA Times, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN with emails and letters to help them identify what the real news is here.

Dumb and Dumber
Get your head out of the sand...

"I just think that now we need to get the hell out of there. If they want to kill each other then let them." This came from an article today in the Independent (UK) about Nick Berg and I find the mentality very disturbing. Was this person in a coma on September 11, 2001? They don't want to just kill each other, they want to kill us! Wake up. There is a reason we are at war.

What we are up against for generations to come...

Thanks to Andrew Sullivan for this link to an interesting article about a teachers experience in Central Asia and the anti-Americanism that is flourishing there.

Ted Kennedy

Sometimes I have to remain silent until I can regain my composure, which is why I have yet to comment on Teddy Kennedy's comment about Saddam's torture chambers being under new management. I can't control myself yet but I also cannot contain my self either. So here it goes...You ignorant, self-serving, reckless, pandering, posionous, political puke. How dare you even begin to equate the men and women of our military to that murderous, evil, dictator and his sadistic sons? The fact that you sit as a member of the Armed Services Committee and would make such a statement is inexcusable and unforgivable. Your reckless comments have jeopardized the soldiers whom you serve. I want a public, prime-time apology to our military for your outrageous comments and I WANT YOUR RESIGNATION NOW! You are not fit to sit in judgement of them nor should you have any say in affairs concerning them.

An Open Letter to Terrorists
I know you listen to our insane media and some of our hubris politicians as you have been known to quote them in the past. I’m sure you might actually believe their distorted reality, as you seem prone to the same affliction.

Yesterday you murdered an American civilian whose only crime was that he was an American. This was supposed to terrorize me and show me what a formidable enemy you are. Once again, you have failed. What I saw was five cowards who don’t have the guts to show their faces, heavily armed, overtake a single man who was bound and unable to offer any resistance and murder him. What strength, what bravery, and what courage you exhibited for the entire world to see! With a little more practice, you might work your way up to trying one with one hand free to defend himself. Pity your faces were covered, we missed the glee they must have shown over this tremendous accomplishment. The “god is great” gave us some indication, but there is just nothing quite like a little body language to go with it. The retribution for the Iraqi prisoners was a nice touch but not very believable since this was a rerun of Daniel Perl and others before him.

Our media keeps telling me how sophisticated your group is. I just don’t see any evidence of it myself. So far your attacks have shown that you can synchronize your watches. Good, you can tell time like most kindergartners. Maybe if you’re lucky your cereal boxes may provide you with secret decoder rings for future use. Personally, I think your idiots. You pre-empted the non-stop coverage around the world of the prison scandal in Iraq, which was making us look bad. Timing is everything and quite frankly yours needs some work.

You think Americans are the Great Satan. Fortunately for you, you are wrong again. If we followed your logic (or lack of) that allowed you to justify the murder of Nicholas Berg, the Middle East would cease to exist. He was killed because he was an American. How about we avenge his death with an arsenal of nukes that that merges the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Caspian Sea and the Indian Ocean and gives the eastern border of Chad and Libya a coastline? If we were the Great Satan, what few survivors that might be left in your region would be suffering radiation poisoning right now, because it would not be an idle threat. The capability is there but is not used because we cherish life, freedom, and believe in justice. Instead, we sacrifice our own blood to prevent the loss of life of the innocent civilians caught between us. You target innocent civilians. Which one of us is the Great Satan?

You say you do this in the name of your god and that you will be rewarded for your martyrdom. You are commanded to kill the infidels. Tell me, if your god is a god, why does he need the likes of you to fight his battles for him? Could your all-powerful god not smite the infidels with the mere wave of a hand if that was his wish? Either he isn’t very powerful or you are mistaken about his wishes because no serious religion advocates murder. Since you have been wrong on so many other occasions, you had better hope that God is all-forgiving. We, however, are not and will be happy to have our brave soldiers arrange the meeting for you. Bon Voyage!

You slaughtered a human being yesterday and were pleased by it. Some have called you criminals, thugs, barbarians, and animals. I would not defame any of those things by equating you with them. You are pig shit. Excrement, waste products, that just needs to be picked up and put in the proper receptacles. Coffins will do nicely as I wouldn't want to clog the toilet. One by one, you will be hunted down and brought to justice.

“We will not waiver. We will not tire. We will not falter. And we will not fail. Peace and freedom, will prevail.” Words to live by for me and words to die by for you.

Enough is enough!
Okay media, this hardworking American has enough of the slow trickle of photos released day after day about the prisoner abuse in Iraq. We get the point. We got the point with the first batch that was released.

If you felt a duty to inform the American people and the world of the disgusting behavior of a small group of our soldiers, your mission has been accomplished. I can only interpret the daily barrage at this point as a deliberate attempt to slowly bleed to death our mission in Iraq. By doing so, you put our soldiers further at risk.

The media will not be alone in this. Because it’s an election year, the incident has now become the carcass for a feeding frenzy for the vultures in Washington who never hesitate to politicize any topic. Today’s headlines…Rumsfeld should resign. Now, we will suffer through countless calls for independent investigations and over the top allegations. All of which keep fueling the “hate America” fires that burn in the hearts of our enemies. The fact is that there is very little or nothing we can do to win the hearts and minds of those hate us. But it doesn’t take much to add to that hatred.

It is unfortunate that the stupid acts of a few can tarnish the image of so many. They have disgraced their fellow soldiers as well as their prisoners. But, I have no doubt that the incident will be dealt with appropriately through the military justice system which has little tolerance for disgraceful behavior and fewer protections afforded for those who stand accused than those given an ordinary citizen through our criminal and civil justice systems.

There is still a war that needs to be fought and won. We don’t need to help our enemies. We need to help the young men and women who are fighting to keep us safe all around the world. To our military, walk proud today as you should do everyday and be safe. The few who are responsible for these acts are the only ones that need feel that shame and they owe their prisoners, their fellow soldiers, and the Iraqi and American people an apology. I salute your courage, honor, and dignity, which allows your good work to be done each day.

To the media, politicians, and partisan hacks that will do more harm than good for their country today, I salute your work also. But I am only using one finger.

Don’t Let the Door…
Two American soldiers have fled to Canada and are seeking asylum as refugees. One is an 18 year old who joined the Army to get a college education. I’m not sure what the IQ level is of someone who joins the military following a war in Afghanistan, in the middle of War on Terrorism, and during escalating tensions with Iraq and doesn’t contemplate thoroughly the potential consequences of their actions. I would surmise that it might be a contributing factor to his ineligibility for a scholarship or student loan to get that education on his own.

The second is a 25 year old who has been in the service since he was 17. He is married and has a small child. He failed to show up for deployment with his unit to Iraq. Both apparently felt the war was illegal and couldn’t participate in it. Both are said to have expressed their reservations to their commanders who advised them to “think less.” The elder of the two is now a peace activist frequently speaking at anti-war demonstrations. (Perfect timing. With the constant reruns on our news of John Kerry’s anti-war activism thirty years ago. He can probably get some good pointers and recycled sound bites to use up there.)

It is doubtful that they will be granted asylum. So the question is, what do you want to do with them? They are probably facing extradition, military tribunal, and a long prison sentence. Personally, I don’t want them back. I think we should desert them, yank their citizenship, bar them from ever re-entering this country again, and shoot them on sight if they ever set foot again on American soil. But of course, I’m just an old softy... Let me know your thoughts.

Geeks will appreciate this...
A woman whose computer was infected with CWS places her laptop underneath a statue of the blessed Virgin Mary in a desperate attempt to cure it from showing her porn ads. I have stopped just short of this at work when tearing my hair out over some little vermin’s latest attempt to ruin my day. Perhaps we could expedite Bishop O’Brian’s 1000 hours of Community Service by having him perform an exorcism on a few machines at work I am dealing with.

Here's the article.

On the serious side of this subject, I have just spent the weekend trying to clean out numerous infections and ad generating software from a friend’s laptop without total success. I am getting ready to wipe it and reinstall the operating system and software. It started out as a challenge but I have quickly lost the desire to follow the little miscreant’s trail. There is a file that I can’t find that is rewriting the registry entries for a browser hijacker after Norton, Ad Aware, SpyBot, and Hijack This, have detected and quarantined the files and I have hand edited the registry to remove any remnants of them. The reason I have lost patience is because this was all preventable. Her subscription to her virus protection was allowed to expire.

IF YOU ARE ON THIS SITE AND YOU DO NOT HAVE UP TO DATE VIRUS PROTECTION AND A FIREWALL, GET OFF AND DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET UNTIL YOU DO! As you can see, I am getting a little pissy about the lack of accountability and shirking of responsibility of a lot of Internet users.

Owning a computer and having the privilege of an Internet connection comes with some responsibility because your machine can be used as a weapon. The Internet is a wonderful tool but will become worthless thanks to the virus writers and spammers and those that enable them.

Microsoft constantly releases patches and security updates for their products. If you are running Microsoft as your operating system, you better be familiar with this website.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

If you are running XP or 2000, you can set your machine to automatically go out and pick up and install those updates on a daily basis. DO IT! (Check your help file or do a Google search for the specific instructions of how to do this.) If you are running 98, put it on your calendar with a notation to upgrade your software! While you are on this site, you will notice that there is also a link to Microsoft Office updates. Yes, there are security flaws in those products also that need to be updated.

http://office.microsoft.com/OfficeUpdate/default.aspx

In their ongoing war against pirated software, the CD is required to put on Office updates. If you are running pirated software, SPEND THE MONEY TO GET A LEGITIMATE COPY SO THAT YOU CAN UPDATE!

Virus protection is a necessity not a luxury. You buy the initial software and then annually you need to buy a subscription to be eligible for the updates. The ongoing subscription is relatively cheap. Most of the vendors pop up a reminder to renew your subscription two weeks before it expires. When you see that reminder, grab your credit card and do it right away. NO EXCUSES! Most vendors also have programmed in the ability to update your virus definitions automatically. FIND OUT HOW AND SET IT UP.

Firewalls are not a luxury either. There are many good, cheap or free programs out there to protect you and the rest of us from you when you become part of the problem. One of my favorites is Zone Alarm. Zone Labs puts this simple and effective version out there free. You will need to invest a little time to teach it. GET OVER IT, IT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY!

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=pdb_za1

The paid for versions do a lot more and if you can afford it, I would recommend you go that route. The freebie gives you at least some protection and detection ability.

GET OFF DIAL UP! The most common excuse I hear for not updating machines with security patches and current virus definitions is that it takes too long to down load on dial up. Yes it does, so get off the dial up. Don’t surf the net un-patched or unprotected. You are like a drunk driver to the rest of us.

Pop Up Blockers help you protect you from yourself. A pop up shows up your screen and you click okay without really reading it. You’ve just authorized installation of a spyware program that may start to wreak havoc on your machine. BLOCK THEM! One of the best blockers I have found is free from Google on the Google toolbar. CHOOSE TO NOT INSTALL THE ADVANCED FEATURES, just the toolbar.

http://www.google.com/options/index.html

Scroll down to the Google Toolbar icon. You will get runtime errors on some pages of the Internet since the blocker won’t allow the scripts to run that are embedded in the pages. Like Martha would say, “That’s a good thing.” Happily click not to debug and go on about your merry way.

Thank you for allowing my little screed this morning. I need to try to sleep some more because when I get to work this morning, there will be several thousand emails sitting in the spam trap for me to go through of which at least 50% are infected little gifts from you this morning. Maybe tomorrow you will "MAKE MY DAY" and have followed some of this advice.
